Working with Challenging Behaviours Workshop: 2017 Workshop dates

Step by Step Psychology will be running a workshop for parents and carers on understanding and working with challenging behaviours exhibited by young children.

Presented by Psychologist Cara Small

The 2-hour workshop will focus on:

  • Functions of Behaviour: determining the reasons for particular behaviour being demonstrated by children.
  • Responding to your child’s challenging behaviour to minimise its occurrence, based on the specific function or trigger.
  • How to conduct a behavioural analysis to help determine the trigger for a behaviour and the most appropriate response.
  • Bribery versus behavioural contracts.
  • Discussion regarding practical strategies to encourage positive behaviours.

Holiday Social Skills Program - Monday 2nd of October– Friday 6th of October 2017

Facilitated by psychologists at Step by Step Psychology, this intensive social skills program allows for children to learn and practise a range of social skills in a supported environment.

Monday 2nd – Friday 6th October
10am-11.45am (child must attend all sessions)

The program will be tailored to the needs of the children attending, but will focus on the practical application of skills, such as:

  • Coping strategies – implementing calming tools in the moment
  • Joining in – engaging with others via play and conversation
  • Theory of Mind – understanding the perspective of others
  • Team Work – negotiation, compromise and co-operation

Investment: $850 including a written report with recommendations.
Mental Health Care Plan rebate of at $21.65 per session or payment with FAHCSIA funding are available.

Preschool Aged Social Skills Program- Term 3

Facilitated by psychologists at Step by Step Psychology, this social skills program allows for children to learn and practise a range of social skills in a supported environment.

The program will be tailored to the needs of the children attending, but will focus on the practical application of skills, such as:

  • Initiating and sustaining play
  • Working as a team/group
  • Conversation skills
  • Implementing appropriate coping strategies

'Just for Girls' Group - Term 4

Step by Step Psychology are running a group program in Term 3 which is ‘Just for Girls’ aged between 8 – 13 years.

The group will have a project that participants will work on together over the five sessions with a focus on the following skills:

  • Emotion regulation (inc. anxiety management in social contexts)
  • Working as part of a team/group
  • Negotiation and compromise
  • Listening to the ideas of others
  • Conversation skills
  • Reading and understanding non-verbal cues and body language
  • Theory of Mind (understanding the point of view of others)

 

The group will run from 4-5.30pm on:

Tuesday the 17th of October
Tuesday the 31st of October
Tuesday the 14th of November
Tuesday the 28th of November
Tuesday the 12th of December

 

Total cost:  $550 per term.

To secure your child’s place, we would require a $100 deposit upon reservation, with the remaining $450 payable across the first 2 sessions.

"Building Resilience" - dates to be confirmed, taking expressions of interest

Designed for upper primary school-aged children, this program focuses on developing the social and emotional skills required to thrive in social and educational environments.

Many children have difficulty with managing strong emotions, such as anger and anxiety, and lack the confidence to effectively communicate with others. This program addresses these difficulties, along with enhancing coping strategies and your child’s self-esteem. Based a cognitive-behavioural therapy approach, the program addresses negative thought patterns to build your child’s confidence and ability to overcome difficult situations.

 

When: 5 weekly sessions

Costs involved: $500 for the program

"Mindfullness Relaxation" - dates to be confirmed, taking expressions of interest

Our program is designed to teach your child a range of relaxation techniques to assist them to regulate their emotions and approach difficult situations in a calm manner.

Each technique will be taught and practiced, with children encouraged to practice at home and determine which type of relaxation technique works best for them.

Mindfulness and relaxation strategies are well-documented to help adults and children alike create a calmness in their life which can then be used when approaching difficult situations. These strategies can also help to reduce stress and improve sleep.

Teaching these techniques to children provides them with knowledge and skills which they can carry through adolescence and into adult life.

Information sheets regarding the activities and techniques will be provided to parents, with at-home tasks between sessions to enable the child to consolidate their learning.

The program will run for 5 consecutive weeks beginning The cost of the program is $300.

"School Readiness" - Term 4, 2017

Step by Step Psychology are running a fortnightly school readiness program in Term 4 for children who are starting Prep in 2018.
The group will focus on:
• Behavioural targets and ‘learning to learn’ skills such as compliance, listening and responding to instructions and sitting and attending to tasks
• Emotion understanding and regulation, including use of the ‘zones of regulation.’
• Thinking strategies such as ‘big deal’ vs. ‘little deal’
• Understanding friendships
• Negotiation and compromise
• Theory of Mind – understanding the point of view of others

There is a maximum of 6 places available in this group. The dates on which the group will run are:

Wednesday 18th October 10am – 11.15am
Wednesday 1st of November 10am – 11. 15am
Wednesday the 15th November 10am – 11. 15am
Wednesday the 29th November 10am – 11. 15am
Wednesday the 13th December 10am – 11. 15am

It is expected that children will attend all sessions, with the total cost being $690, including a written report at the conclusion of the program. To secure a place, we would require confirmation of attendance by a 22nd September, with a non-refundable deposit of $180 payable at confirmation.
Payments can also be made using FaHCSIA funding for those who are eligible, however, if a child does not attend a session, this cannot be claimed through FaHCSIA and will be an out of pocket cost.
