Counselling Services

Counselling services are beneficial in a variety of circumstances and at Step by Step Psychology we work with clients to address their concerns. Counselling most often involves working directly with the client to address their difficulties and support them to overcome their challenges.

When working with children, we believe that successful outcomes rely on the support the child receives from their family members and seek to involve families in psychological intervention when it is believed it will have a positive effect.

We are a flexible service, using a variety of psychological and counselling techniques, to suit the client’s personality and presenting concerns. As such, all intervention processes at Step by Step Psychology are individually tailored to maximise positive outcomes for the individual client. Our primary intervention approaches are Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Behavioural Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, depending on the preference and needs of the client.

Many people experience anxiety, but at times, it can become overwhelming to the point where it may impede on daily life.

Some people may experience general feelings of anxiety, while others may experience a more specific form of anxiety such as a phobia or separation anxiety. Separation anxiety in particular can be experienced by children when attending school or kindergarten, and can lead to school refusal as a long-term consequence.

At Step by Step Psychology, we can work with the client, and their family if required, to address their feelings of anxiety and the associated consequences.

Emotional and Mood Difficulties

Many people engage in counselling when they are experiencing difficulties processing their emotions, or are overwhelmed by emotion. Persistent sadness, stress, anger management, self-harm and low self-esteem are just some of the difficulties for which people may seek counselling, and these feelings may or may not be caused by a particular event.

Step by Step Psychology can assist clients to work towards overcoming the persistent experience of these difficult feelings and achieve a more balanced approached to life.

Eating Disorders

Accreditation with the Australian Centre for Eating Disorders means that some of our psychologists have specialist knowledge and skills to work with clients experiencing difficulties with eating, including the diagnosis and management of specific disorders such as Bulima Nervosa, Anorexia Nervosa and Binge Eating Disorder.

Eating Disorders can be confusing and overwhelming for families as well as for individuals, and we aim to provide support for all those involved. The Australian Centre for Eating Disorders accreditation means that we have an in depth understanding of the difficulties experienced by a person with a eating disorder and try to work with them toward recovery.

School and Social Challenges

School can be a difficult experience for many children and young people, both academically and socially.

Clients can seek assistance with a range of difficulties associated with kindergarten and school such as social skills and friendship difficulties, bullying, school refusal and exam stress. Additionally, we can assist families of clients with special needs to best support their child in either the mainstream or specialist school setting.

Step by Step Psychology can assist clients and their families to work through the difficulties encountered associated with schooling.

Family Difficulties

Many families face challenges for which they seek assistance, such as differences in parenting styles, communication difficulties, family breakdown/divorce or coping with the diagnosis of disability or illness of a child or sibling.

Step by Step Psychology can work with individuals or family groups to address difficulties being experienced in every day life.
